Reproducible positioning due to kinematic snap in mechanism

Flag style sample plates are commonly used in many home built and commercial UHV surface science instruments and scanning probe microscopes. The standard holders have the disadvantage of non-reproducible positioning when placed into their receptors. In order to overcome this problem, we have introduced three slits in the sample plate, while keeping the outline dimensions and compatibility with existing transfer systems and receptors. If placed into the corresponding receptor which features three ruby spheres, our modified SHOM snaps in reproducibly with a precision in the micrometer range.

Up to 13 electrical high quality spring contacts for wiring up devices

The SHOMEC13 features a total of thirteen high quality spring contacts mounted into an AlN-isolator. The shape and opening of the top plate and shield cover can be customized to your needs.

Pocket underneath the sample mounting plate allows convenient installation of temperature sensor

A slit in the ceramic base plate allows for the mounting of a DT-670 silicon diode temperature sensor, a thermocouple or Pt100 resistor.

To illustrate a possible application, the image above shows an example of an SOIC-08 surface mount socket.

 A temperature sensor where you really need one: Right on the back side of your sample.

Accurate temperature measurement is usually problematic with transferable sample plates. Here, a DT-670 silicon diode is placed right underneath the sample mounting plate. By re-machining the sample mounting plate for a specific sample, it becomes possible to bring the temperature sensor even in direct contact with the actual sample. Molybdenum base plate and shield cap for high thermal conductance and low CTE

Molybdenum and Shapal M both feature a relatively high coefficient of thermal conductivity between 100-140 (W/m/K) (@20C). Coefficients of thermal expansion of Mo and Shapal are well matched at 4.8 for Shapal and 5.35 (10E-6/K) for Mo. All selected materials are suitable for cryogenic temperatures and UHV.

Sample Holder for Single Crystals

The SHOMCH flag style sample holder simplifies the process of mounting single crystals (type K005), it's four slits in the retaining plate ensuring safe and level clamping.

This example of a sample holder has geometrical design that is laid out for single crystals with the dimensions of: A = 8 mm, B = 5 mm, C = 2 mm, D = 1 mm (single crystal type K005). If you need other dimensions or use another single crystal type, please do not hesitate to contact us.

For preparing semiconductor surfaces like the Si 7x7 reconstruction for instance, the best and most simple way is usually direct current heating. SHOMDC sample holders are made of Molybdenum and Al2O3. The sample is secured by two Mo strips.

For spectroscopy and STM experiments, the SHOMDC(N) is recommended. With the SHOMDC(N), one side of the sample is permanently grounded with metallic (Mo) spacers instead of the ceramic ones the SHOMDC features.

RECOMDC provides the necessary receiver with isolated contact rails for attaching wires.

Sample Carrier with Heater and Crucible

This sample holder with integrated heater and crucible can be used as a "mini evaporator" for organic materials or other materials with low melting point and higher vapor pressures. For heating, the sample holder must be placed on two electrically isolated pins. We provide the CS40 or DCH40 direct current stages as a possible heating station. The heating is done with a simple Tungsten wire which is easy to replace.

Tantalum Sample Holder for direct current heating

This sample holder provides a reliable solution for preparing a Si 111 (7x7)surface. All that is needed to heat the sample is basically a set of electrically isolated contact pins with leads to an electrical feedthrough. The heating stage DCH40 provides such a setup. Sample temperature is ideally measured with a pyrometer.

The sample holder is split in two halves, isolated by an ALN-isolator. The sample is held in place by two spot welded stripes of Ta-foil.

Alternatively, an SHBSDC model with two strips secured with M1 Ta-screws is available.

A current of up to 15A can be applied to the sample.
